about

FUTURESPECTIVE PERSPECTIVE

This wasn’t supposed to be a record, at least, it wasn’t intended to be released as a collection of works packaged together. At the beginning of 2021 I made a goal to release at least one track a month as a way to get older music that had been sitting in folders in various states of completion on my computer, finished & out into the world. Adding lyrics & vocals was a conscious decision to bring deeper meaning & connection to the music, & since I had wanted to release my remix of “Desire” for several years, that became the first release. “Paraglider" represents a newer track I started in spring of 2021 and was released in June; it was also the first instrumental song released last year, in contrast to most of my previous output prior to 2021. Ultimately, the record is a mixture of older (2016-2020) & newer material, & is a decent representation of the music I had been sitting on. Part of the fun of the monthly release exercise was sorting through & finding those musical snapshots in time, phases I went through that were interrupted or abandoned for one reason or another. Much of what I gained in the process relates to making a habit out of finishing & releasing those parts of my catalog, & more music in general. Another big takeaway from last year’s release exercise was to spend more time on the final stages - mixing & “mastering” - that tended to be rushed, despite best intentions. It's definitely more stressful to wait until the last minute to mix! When there was no time to send the songs to Royce, I had to figure out the "mastering" part myself. At that point, there were a few months that I only released music on Bandcamp, & didn’t post about it on social media or send it to streaming services; part of that was definitely the "comparison is the thief of joy" dilemma. Sonically, I'm aiming to hear my songs next to my favorite artists/producers & have the same adjectives come to mind - "space, width, dimension, impact". Even though I wasn’t getting there, sticking with the process of trial & error, learning, applying those lessons & with the support & encouragement of friends & peers who I trust, I was able to push through that barrier (plus, you can replace Bandcamp files immediately as many times as you want!). Another part of that, is the line between being objective & subjective was easily blurred when most or all of the decisions about my music were being made, by me. Sometimes all I can do is reference something that sounds good to me sonically even though it could take quite a long time to reach that level of skill in my own music, & it’s easy to get discouraged. On the other hand, what I was & am doing are the kinds of exercises that bring me closer to finding my own voice & sound.. Finally, & perhaps most importantly, the album represents a number of collaborations that existed & were reinforced, or are brand new; all partnerships I expect to strengthen, building personally & musically, & sharing those experiences & the music we make from them, with you.

I love with all my heart, & am eternally grateful for the support, positivity & collaborations from & with: @amber_nicole_holt @approach78_ @buythewax @designedbymilk @ghostmstyle @heidigluck @kpaludan @maria_elena_cuevas @roycediamond @tannerwalle @kkfi901fm & @909thebridge Howie Howard (MrFuriousRecords) Mom My Family The Sanchez Family The Cuevas Family DJNOTADJ Everyone I am involved with musically; past, present, & future.
